By the end of 2021, Middle East and North Africa’s (“MENA”) share of the global number of FemTech companies reached 7%, per FemTech Analytics, a subsidiary of UK-based consortium, Deep Knowledge Group. According to the latest 2021 Global FemTech Industry report by FemTech Analytics, North America continues to dominate the FemTech market housing approximately 55% of FemTech companies globally, followed by Europe (25%) and Asia (8%).

According to the FemTech Industry in the UAE report published by FemTech Analytics in Q4 2021, FemTech businesses in the Mena region account for 5.8 per cent (or US$1.7 billion) of the $29bn invested in digital health in 2021 worldwide, according to the Frost & Sullivan presentation. Menopause, longevity and mental health, then, continue to be sectors that are underserved.

Switzerland is home to 33 startups working on tech-focused solutions to women’s health needs.

Swiss investors are starting to recognize the potential of femtech startups. According to FemTech Analytics, around 40 have invested in the sector to date, with a further 15 nonprofits also offering funding. One of them is Swisscom Ventures, which seven years ago put money into Avawomen, the Swiss startup behind the fertility-tracking bracelet.

The term “FemTech” was coined in 2014 by the period-tracking app Clue, Ida Tin, who explained that it refers to “digital technologies and digital startups created by women for women”.
